Most Australian university students I talk to fall into one of two camps when it comes to AI. They’re either using it for everything and hoping nobody notices, or they’re terrified to touch it at all. Both approaches are wrong, and both come from the same place: nobody has explained where the line actually sits.
I get it. When I started my Graduate Diploma in IT at QUT in 2025, the AI policy landscape was already a maze. Every subject seemed to have slightly different rules. Some encouraged AI use; others banned it outright. And the formal guidance from universities reads like it was written by lawyers, not students. If you’re juggling work, kids, and a full course load, you don’t have time to decode policy documents on top of everything else.
So here’s the practical version. Where the line sits, how to stay on the right side of it, and what to do if something goes wrong.
The Rules Are Still Shifting (and That’s the Problem)
Australia’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) released a report in 2024 describing generative AI as an “evolving risk” to academic integrity (TEQSA, 2024). That word, “evolving”, matters. It means the rules haven’t settled yet, and they vary significantly between institutions.
The University of Sydney, for instance, has published a detailed AI assessment policy that explicitly addresses when AI tools can and can’t be used in coursework (University of Sydney, 2024). UniSA, by contrast, takes a more modular approach through its Academic Integrity learning resources, walking students through scenarios rather than issuing blanket rules (UniSA, n.d.).
TEQSA’s own student advice page makes the key point clearly: “There might be subjects or tasks where the use of AI is encouraged or even required,” but equally, “Because rules might be different in various disciplines, it’s best to make sure you understand the expectations for each assessment task” (TEQSA, 2023).
That last part is critical. The policy isn’t just per-university. It can be per-subject, per-assessment, per-teaching period. You can’t assume that what was acceptable in one unit will fly in the next.
Always check your own institution’s AI policy before every major assignment. Policies change between semesters. If you can’t find clear guidance, email your unit coordinator and ask. A two-sentence email now saves a misconduct allegation later.
The Spectrum: What’s Clearly Fine, What’s Clearly Not, and the Grey Zone
Think of AI use as a spectrum rather than a binary switch.
Clearly Acceptable (at Most Institutions)
These uses sit comfortably on the ethical side for the vast majority of Australian universities:
- Brainstorming and idea generation. Asking an AI to help you explore angles on a topic before you start researching is no different from talking it through with a classmate.
- Grammar and spelling checks. Grammarly, Word’s built-in editor, and similar tools have been standard for years. AI-powered grammar checking is a natural extension.
- Explaining concepts you don’t understand. Pasting a paragraph from a journal article and asking “can you explain this in simpler terms?” is study, not cheating. You’re building comprehension.
- Generating practice questions. Having an AI quiz you on lecture content is active recall, one of the most effective study techniques going.
Clearly Unacceptable

- Having AI write assignment paragraphs, sections, or drafts that you then submit. Even if you edit it afterwards, the core intellectual work wasn’t yours.
- Using AI to generate answers for exams or in-class assessments where it’s not explicitly permitted.
The Grey Zone
This is where most students get confused, and where the real risk lives:
- Using AI to summarise readings. Acceptable as a study aid to supplement your own reading. Unacceptable if you never read the source and rely solely on the summary for your assignment.
- Using AI to understand a rubric. Pasting your rubric into an AI and asking “what is this actually asking for?” helps you decode the task. That’s study. But if you then ask “write me a response that meets these criteria,” you’ve crossed the line.
- Using AI to restructure or improve your own draft. Some institutions allow this; others don’t. Check the specific assessment requirements.

The Learning Test
Here’s the simplest way to check yourself: if you couldn’t explain or reproduce the work without the AI tool, you’ve crossed the line.
I use this test constantly. During my MBA at Swinburne, I learned the hard way that understanding material well enough to pass an exam is different from understanding it well enough to apply it. The mark-shock of handing in work you thought was strong, only to get a result well below expectations, is brutal on motivation. It usually happens when you’ve drifted off the rubric in a subtle way you didn’t notice.
AI tools can help you notice those drifts earlier. But only if you’re using them to sharpen your own thinking, not replace it.
Ask yourself after every AI interaction:
- Can I explain this concept to someone else without looking at the AI’s response?
- Could I write this section again from scratch, using only my own understanding?
- Do I understand why this answer is correct, not just that it is?
If the answer to any of those is no, go back and do the learning. The shortcut isn’t worth it.
How to Cite AI Tool Use
An increasing number of Australian universities now require students to acknowledge when they’ve used AI tools, even for permitted uses. But here’s what matters more than the format: transparency about what you used the tool for. Many institutions now ask students to include an AI use declaration alongside their submission. Even if yours doesn’t require it yet, getting into the habit is smart. A brief statement like “I used Claude to help me understand the rubric criteria and generate practice questions for self-testing” protects you if questions arise later.
AI Detection: Why False Positives Happen and What to Do
Turnitin’s AI writing detector is now active at most Australian universities. And it gets things wrong. I dug into the broader detection landscape in why AI detection tools are dying, but the short version is that false positives are a serious problem.
Research from Stanford’s Institute for Human-centred AI found that AI detection tools are significantly biased against non-native English speakers, with higher false positive rates for writers whose English is a second language (Liang et al., 2023). The peer-reviewed paper behind this finding, published in Patterns, demonstrated that GPT detectors consistently misclassified non-native English writing as AI-generated (Liang et al., 2023).
This isn’t a niche problem. Australia’s universities have enormous international student populations, and many domestic students also speak English as an additional language. A tool that flags clean, human-written work as AI-generated creates real harm.
If You’re Wrongly Flagged
- Don’t panic. A Turnitin AI score is not a conviction. It’s one data point. Most universities require human review before any misconduct finding.
- Document your process. If you kept drafts, notes, browser history, or AI chat logs showing you used tools only for permitted purposes, gather them.
- Request the formal process. TEQSA requires all institutions to have complaint and appeal procedures. You have the right to respond to allegations and present evidence.
- Get support. Your student union or student advocacy service can help you navigate the process. Don’t try to handle a misconduct allegation alone.
Practical Scenarios for Time-Poor Students
If you’re working full-time and studying part-time (like I’ve done across multiple degrees now), here’s how ethical AI use can actually save you time without crossing any lines.
Scenario 1: You have 45 minutes before the kids need picking up. Open your assignment rubric. Paste it into an AI tool and ask it to break down what each criterion is really asking for. Use that breakdown to set up your document structure with headings and target word counts per section. You haven’t written a word of the assignment, but you’ve done genuine preparatory work.
Scenario 2: You’re behind on readings. Use AI to explain the key arguments in a difficult journal article. Then go back and read the original yourself, focusing on the sections the AI flagged as important. The AI is a reading guide, not a reading replacement.

TEQSA’s position is clear: AI isn’t banned. But using it in ways that are inconsistent with your institution’s rules is academic misconduct, and TEQSA positions gen AI misuse alongside contract cheating in terms of seriousness (TEQSA, 2024).
The good news is that ethical AI use isn’t complicated. Use it to learn, not to produce. Cite it when required. Check your institution’s policy before every major assessment. And if you can’t explain the work without the tool, you haven’t learned it yet.
The rules will keep evolving. But the principle won’t change: the degree is supposed to mean you can do the thing. Make sure you can.
